Are light bulbs in your house burning out in a matter of months or weeks? It can be frustrating if you’re noticing that light bulbs are burning out much faster than usual. Not only could it be frustrating constantly having to change your light bulbs, but it also poses a possible fire hazard. If your light bulbs go out constantly, there might be a deeper issue within your electrical system. Read on for the top reasons why light bulbs go out!
A Batch of Bad Light Bulbs
The new bulbs you bought might have needed improvement. So, what should you do in this case? Make sure to send the bulbs back to the manufacturer or back to where you bought them originally. Most LED and CFL bulbs have warranties, and you could also try a different brand of light bulb.
Excessive Heat Buildup
LED light bulbs are especially sensitive to heat, and too much heat could shorten the lifespan of any CFL or incandescent bulbs. Light bulbs that are fully enclosed are more susceptible to premature failure from excessive heat since the enclosure traps the heat. We see this issue especially in recessed lights. Recessed lighting(sometimes known as can lighting) are lights that are hidden within your home’s ceiling. To help ventilate the heat made by lights, there are holes within the fixture that vent the heat up into your attic. However, these holes could get clogged up by insulation in your attic, leading to a buildup of heat that kills the bulbs prematurely. If this happens to your light bulbs, make sure that the ventilation holes in your recessed lights are not blocked by insulation. Also, make sure you get a light bulb that is specially made for enclosed fixtures and recessed fixtures. This should be obvious from the packaging of the light bulbs.
Using the Wrong Types of Light Bulbs
One common type of light bulb that goes out frequently is CFL light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs have a reputation for going out fast. If you use that type of light bulb, you should strongly consider switching to LED light bulbs as they’re more durable, reliable, and environmentally friendly. If you’re using a 60-watt lamp with an 120-watt light bulb, then there is a good chance of burnout because of the additional heat that is produced. Always check for the wattage of your light bulb to make sure it will work with your lighting fixture.
