What You Need to Know About Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

What You Need to Know About Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Here’s what you need to know about both, and how the detectors can end up saving your life!

Be safe! You might not know when smoke and carbon monoxide gathers inside your home. After all, you won’t always be able to see it or smell it. Here’s what you need to know about both, and how the detectors can end up saving your life!

They Keep You Safe

Whenever fire or leaks occur, you might not know about it right away. That’s why the detectors are so important: they help keep you safe. That way, you and your family and guests can get out in time. After that, you can call for help. In Maryland and many other states, there are many rules, regulations, and laws you will need to be aware of and follow when it’s time to install or maintain the detectors, so be sure to do your homework!

A Look at Smoke Detectors

Now, let’s take a look at smoke detectors. There are two types of modern smoke detectors. They are ionization and photoelectric. If smoke enters the chamber of an ionization detector, it immediately goes off. That’s why smoke from the kitchen when you’re cooking can set it off. Photoelectric detectors use a beam of light that will trip the alarm if it is interrupted by smoke particles.

A Look at Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Lastly, let’s take a look at how carbon monoxide detectors really work. You may not know this, but there are three different kinds of carbon monoxide detectors. They are biomimetic metal oxide semiconductor, and electrochemical. You need to have several carbon monoxide detectors, especially since you can’t see, smell, or taste it. Gels and chips are what are used to detect the presence of this poisonous substance. Make sure your detectors are running as they should, and replace any that are no longer working.
