Spring is heating up here in Maryland, and Summer will be here before we know it. At TriStar Electric, we understand that sometimes utility bills tend to go up in the warmer parts of the year. If you’re looking for some ways to save, here are a couple of tips for reducing your energy usage this spring and summer.
Unplug
Did you know that leaving your chargers plugged in all the time still uses energy? Many people are surprised when they find out that even when something is turned off if it’s plugged in it’s still using energy. When your electronics are fully charged, unplug the cords. If you’re going out for an extended period of time, such as a vacation, unplug everything except your fridge, freezer, and DVR.
Scheduling
Most thermostats found in homes and commercial buildings nowadays are programmable. This is a great feature for saving energy. When you’re going to be away for a while, like leaving the office for the evening, set the thermostat up a couple of degrees but program it to take the temperature back down an hour or two before you come back in the morning.
Cut Screen Time
That cool new home theater is fantastic for entertaining family and guests, but it can use up quite a bit of energy to run all those gadgets and gizmos. Instead of family movie night around the TV, try a game night instead. You’ll still get to spend time with loved ones, but it won’t be using a ton of energy.
