The Ultimate Generac Generator Troubleshooting Guide

The Ultimate Generac Generator Troubleshooting Guide

The specialists at TriStar Electric can help you with any Generac generator problems!

A Generac generator installation in your house is a nice way to keep your house safe and functional once an outage strikes. But it won’t do you good if it isn’t working right! If you are having issues with your generator, then you have come to the right place! The specialists at TriStar Electric can help you with any Generac generator problems. Read on for a troubleshooting guide for your Generac generators!

Begin with the Easy Maintenance

A couple of these may feel silly, but it is important to be as thorough as possible when you’re troubleshooting, checking off every possibility at a time.

  • Make sure there is enough fuel. It might be that your generator was recently used and not refueled or that the system has a leak. Either way, check the fuel level before anything else.
  • Make sure the generator is engaged. Make sure the switch is firmly in the “on” position. Older generators could usually develop a bit of a sticking problem, keeping the switch from engaging fully without a bit of extra push.
  • Check your electrical connections. All visible wiring or fuel lines should be tight and snug, with no cracking or fraying. If there’s a wiring problem, call in the professionals!

What to Look Out For

Allow us to go over some signs of a bigger problem and what may be going wrong:

  • Strange noises during operation. Is your generator chattering or popping during any routine operations? The most common cause is a bad fuel mix or failing parts. The fuel mix problem tends to create “sputtering” sounds and component failure will sound like metal on metal.
  • Spotty Generac generator power. If your generator’s power stutters or makes lights or appliances flicker then the problem is almost certainly a loose or damaged electrical connection.
  • Any Leaks. Check consistently for puddles of liquid like fuel or oil. Any leaks should be fixed as soon as possible to avoid any risks and damage to the home or Generac generator.

Common Causes of Generator Failures

Here are a few things that should get routine service:

  • Your generator battery. The majority of Generac generator failures involve old or damaged batteries. Generator batteries should be changed every two years.
  • Coolant levels. Low coolant levels can trip a sensor and force a generator into a state where it can’t start up. Check to make sure the cap is tight, and coolant levels are in a good range.
  • Electrical components and sensors. In many cases, electrical failure can result in the generator not starting. This is because Generac generators are set to work only when it is safe to do so.
