The Smartest Ways to Prevent Electrical Fires in Your Home

The Smartest Ways to Prevent Electrical Fires in Your Home

Preventing electrical fires from happening is not as difficult as you’d think.

Electrical problems account for a lot of fires each year. These fires not only put the lives of your family and friends at risk but could also be a financial burden and inconvenience that could take months or years to overcome. The good news is that preventing electrical fires from happening in the first place is not as difficult as long as you are attentive and diligent. Read on for a few quick tips that you should start following as soon as you can!

Hire Electricians to Inspect Your Home’s Wiring

While the wiring in your home is pretty tough, it won’t last forever. After a while, it breaks down and causes a potentially dangerous situation for your home. If your house is more than ten years old or you have a reason to suspect an issue with your home’s wiring, don’t hesitate to have it checked out by a professional to determine if a replacement is needed.

Be Careful with Electrical Cords

Power cords present a fire hazard for different reasons. They could be pulled on by kids, mishandled by adults, or chewed on by family pets or wild animals like mice. They could also heat up and require air flow to cool down. A lack of such airflow could usually cause a safety hazard, especially when flammable items are in the areas.

Install the Right Light Bulbs

A lot of people reading this could be surprised to learn that the voltage requirements listed on light bulbs are there for a reason and are something that might be followed as closely as possible. Not doing so could cause electrical fires to break out. Our advice is to take it a step further, and purchase LED lights, which do not overheat like traditional light bulbs and use less energy than traditional lights.

Do Not Overload the Outlets

We all have a friend that tries to cram as many devices into an outlet as possible. This is done by using outlet extensions that double the amount of devices that could be plugged into a single outlet. Those are safe for the most part, but once you get to the point of plugging an extension into another extension, it could be time for you to evaluate your electrical use.
