Light switches are common in every building and have become essential fixtures in most of our daily activities. Since they last so long and we use them all the time, it is easy to overlook their upkeep. However, you might have heard a noise from your light switch or have a flickering light inside of your home that you can’t resolve. Before you call TriStar Electric to resolve your electrical issue, this blog can help you figure out what is causing your property’s light switches to go bad. Read on to learn more!
Different Lighting Issues
If your lights don’t turn on, and they take a long time to turn on or flicker, and replacing the bulb doesn’t solve the problem, then there is something wrong. Some bulbs, like incandescent tube lights, can take a few minutes to turn on. We have all been in those situations. However, normal light bulbs should illuminate immediately. Replace the bulbs if it takes more than a minute to turn on or if it is flickering. If the issue persists, a new light switch is most likely required.
Clicking Sounds
The light switch in your property makes a clicking sound. The only sound you should hear is the one the switch makes once it’s been flipped. Check for loose wire connections since this can sometimes be the cause. However, these sounds are probably the result of a worn or defective switch. If you hear any clicking, buzzing, or unusual sounds coming from inside of the switch, it could be time to replace it. A few light bulbs might also buzz. If this is the case, try to install a different kind of bulb brand, not just the same brand type. If this doesn’t work, take a closer look at your electrical switch and replace it if required.
Sparks in the Light Switch
When you notice a spark when you turn the switch, the switch needs to be replaced. A natural spark could occur within the switch, but you will only notice it if you turn off the lights and look inside of your switch. It’s caused by a load arc, which happens once electricity jumps between the contacts as they’re pulled apart. It comes to a halt once the contacts are separated. A large spark or a spark that makes a noise means that the light switch is faulty. Replace the light switch if you see any scorch markings after the spark or if it ends up popping or smokes. Delaying this replacement might become a safety hazard on your property.
