Preventing an Electrical Fire in Your Home

Preventing an Electrical Fire in Your Home

Here at TriStar Electric, safety is a top priority! Here are some ways you can prevent an electrical fire in your home.

Did you know that there are more than 20,000 electrical fires reported every year in the United States? The leading cause of all those fires is handling electrical devices incorrectly. Here at TriStar Electric, safety is a top priority! Here are some ways you can prevent an electrical fire in your home.

Don’t Overdo It

While there are many products on the market that are designed to increase the number of plugs you have available, these are not permanent solutions. Each outlet in your home only has a certain amount of energy to give. If you have too many devices trying to pull energy from one outlet, it can be a fire hazard. Instead, simply unplug things when they are not in use. If that isn’t an option, call the experts at TriStar Electric and one of our friendly technicians will be happy to assess your needs and figure out the best solution!

When in Doubt: Throw it Out!

Although that refrigerator Great-Aunt Lucy gave you for a wedding present 20 years ago may still run just fine, that doesn’t mean it’s not a fire hazard. Appliances and other devices being used past their prime are huge risks. Even though the thing still works, that doesn’t mean that the wiring is still in tip-top shape. Any number of factors can cause wiring to deteriorate. Keeping that old fridge is a great sentiment, but it’s not worth your family’s safety!

Regular Inspections from Licensed Electricians

Even though you’ve followed every rule and taken every precaution, little problems can still arise as your home, wiring, and appliances age. Plus, building safety codes change more often than you might think. The best way to prevent an electrical fire is to have a licensed electrician come into your home regularly to make sure everything is safe and compliant with all relevant building codes.
