Preparing for the Next Power Outage

Preparing for the Next Power Outage

You never know when the next power outage will happen.

You never know when the next power outage will happen. It could be because of an unexpected power surge, a tornado or thunderstorm rolling through your neighborhood, or plain old human error. Nobody is perfect, but you need to do everything you can to protect yourself and all of your loved ones during the next power outage that you experience.

When It Happens

Find Some Information:  The first thing you need to do is get some information. This can be hard to do with all the electricity is gone and your WiFi has gone down. If there’s no internet or cell signal, how will you be able to communicate with anyone or know what’s going on? If you can get to your radio or your landline, your smartphone can still be a great help, because you should be able to contact the authorities with it.

Turn Off All Appliances: Until help arrives, all of your appliances are dangerous. For the time being, you need to shut off the power supply until you know it is safe to restore the flow of electricity or gas to them. The power coming back into active devices and appliances can be catastrophic, which means you’re going to need some heavy duty surge protectors if you don’t already have them.

Stay Away from Water: Be mindful of your location and stay away from water. Flooding is often a cause of the power outage, one way or another. Steer clear of downed lines and loose wires that are spitting sparks.

Pay Attention to Temperature: it’s also easy to suffer heat stroke when you can’t stay cool. Depending on when the power outage happens, it could be the day or night. Stay hydrated so that you don’t feel the effects of high temperatures.

Before the Next One

Invest in Surge Protectors: As mentioned earlier, do what you can get to get more surge protectors before the next outage so nothing dangerous happens to you.

Get More Generators: If all else fails, then you might be frustrated by your lack of backup generators. To get the best ones, get in touch with the experts at Tristar Electric today!
