New Homeowners’ Guide to Saving Energy

New Homeowners’ Guide to Saving Energy

Moving into a new home is exciting, especially when it’s your first home. It’s a really big step that takes a significant amount of saving and planning.

Moving into a new home is exciting, especially when it’s your first home. It’s a really big step that takes a significant amount of saving and planning. Once everything is signed and you have the keys, it’s time to start moving in. One of the first things you should start to think about is how you intend to minimize your energy usage. Not only can this save you money, but it’s also better for the environment!

Ceiling Fans

It may sound counterintuitive, but running a ceiling fan year round is one of the best ways to save energy. In the summer, they keep air moving so that the air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to circulate the cool air that it is putting out. When it is cold outside and you have the heat on, the ceiling fans can help to move the warm air as well. What happens when the heat is on is that it will rise up and all the warmest air gets trapped up near the ceiling. By reversing the direction of your ceiling fans, they can actually help to push the warmer air back down to where it is needed most.

Check the Seals

There are all sorts of places where outside air can sneak its way into your home, including around doors and windows and even through electrical outlets. One of the first things you should do when moving to your new home is to check these problem areas thoroughly. If you’re not sure how to do this, or if you want to have your home checked by the professionals, call TriStar Electric for your home energy assessment today!

Choosing the Right Appliances

When you’re shopping for appliances for your new home, you’re going to see hundreds of suggestions for all sorts of gadgets. One very important thing to pay attention to when you’re looking around is the energy ratings for the different appliances. Every new appliance should have a label or tag on it somewhere that gives an estimate of how much it will cost to run in a given year. Don’t compromise the energy efficiency just so you can have the most “bells and whistles.” The extra stuff is neat, but saving energy is far more important.
