Over the past few decades, we’ve all become much more conscious of our environmental impact, especially when it comes to the energy usage in our homes. We’ve also learned so much more about fuel and fuel efficiency. When buying a generator for your home, you may stop and think about the impacts it will have on your local ecosystem. This is why we’ve compiled some pointers on selecting a more eco-friendly generator to soothe those worries.
Consider The Wattage
The first factor to consider is how to filter your needs down to their most basic form. Using a generator to power only what you absolutely have to keep running will save energy and fuel. Calculating the wattage for those needs is a great way to have a concrete figure in mind for your purchase.
The term “surge watts” refers to the power required to start up a motor on an appliance, just to give it that initial jump. This is also called the “starting watts” and it’ll be the upper limit for the wattage that the generator will put out.
“Running watts” describes the continuous power that a generator will give you. After an appliance has started up, this is the number of watts it’ll use to stay on. You can take some time to calculate the minimum wattage you need for your purposes with a simple equation:
(# of watts all essential devices use per hour) x (# of hours of daily use) = minimum running watts.
Natural Gas
Natural gas generators have significantly lower emissions than those running on other fuel sources, which is why they’ve become so popular. Usually, we can hook the equipment up to the natural gas lines that run underneath your house. In the event of some emergency, like a tornado or blackout, you’ll have a reliable way to power your home with a low carbon footprint.
