Your vacation is a time for you to relax and hang out with your family. When most families are preparing for a vacation, there is a frenzy to get all the laundry done and pack bags. Everyone is so focused on not forgetting to pack things that they often forget that there is some preparing that needs to be done for the house, especially the electrical system.
Adjust the Thermostat
Most homes already have a programmable thermostat installed, and some even have one that connects to Wi-Fi that can be adjusted with a smartphone. Whether you have one of these hi-tech versions or a lower-tech model, you will need to adjust it just before you go. If no one is going to be in the home for several days, you can turn up the thermostat a few degrees and save a whole lot of energy.
Appliances and Electronic Devices
Today’s homes have more electronic devices than ever, and even when those things are turned off they are still using energy. Unless something is absolutely essential, you should just un-plug it. Your major kitchen appliances will have to stay on because they need to keep the food cold. The coffee maker, toaster, and other small things, however, can be unplugged while you’re away. If you’ve got a DVR box and a Wi-Fi router, you will want to leave those plugged in so you don’t miss out on your favorite shows that air during your vacation!
Put Lights on a Timer
For security purposes, you will want one or two lights to be on throughout the evening. You can easily put a few lights throughout your home on a timer. The timer will help save energy because the lights won’t be on 24/7, and switching lights on will help keep your home secure while you’re away.
