Before you purchase recessed lighting for your home, make a list of several factors to consider. Recessed light fixtures are flexible and can provide general lighting, task lighting, or accent lighting. When installed correctly, recessed lighting can transform the look, feel, and mood of any room in your home.
What do You Want to Light?
Home recessed lighting can be beneficial if you have low ceilings or illuminate a small room. Eyeball recessed lighting is preferred if you want to light up that portrait on your mantel. If you want more light to read a book, or on your kitchen counter, hallway, or in a large room, a downlight may be what you need. To highlight a large painting or poster, you’ll probably want a wall washer trim.
What Size Light Fixture Should You Buy?
Determine the distance of the ceiling from where you want the light and how big an area you wish to light. In a 10-foot ceiling, go for a 4-inch ceiling fixture since the light will expand more. In an 8-foot ceiling, a 6-inch ceiling downlight will illuminate your breakfast table. The most popular size is a 6-inch ceiling fixture because there are more options on the trim styles available for 6” fixtures than the other sizes; thus, providing you flexibility in choosing the trim you need.
Light Bulb Preference
Incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, and LED light bulbs are suitable for medium screw base lamp holders. Particular light bulbs only go on fixtures with special lamp holders or sockets. Halogen works best to provide that high-intensity light in a small area. Most people prefer incandescent lamps for warm, general lighting. For extra savings, choose LED light bulbs to combine these characteristics. Lastly, choose fixtures you can use incandescent, halogen, or LED light bulbs to dim your recessed lights or control them with a remote system.
