Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane

Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane

With all of the hysteria leading up to this storm, everyone is scrambling around to get ready and it is easy to overlook some of the things that can help your home weather the storm.

Hurricane season has arrived, and for those of us on the East Coast of the US, it’s starting with a bang. Hurricane Florence is expected to be one of the worst hurricanes to hit this part of the country in many years. With all of the hysteria leading up to this storm, everyone is scrambling around to get ready and it is easy to overlook some of the things that can help your home weather the storm.

Know Your Homeowner’s Insurance

Many homeowners assume that their “comprehensive” coverage includes flood coverage. While your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover most of the common mishaps, a staggering number of policies do not actually include coverage for flooding and water damage. This means that if your home does happen to incur water damage or flooding, you could be footing the bill without assistance from your insurance company. Study your policy or talk to your agent to find out if your policy covers flooding. Keep in mind that if it doesn’t and you decide to add this type of coverage, there is almost always a waiting period until the amended policy actually takes effect.

Loss of Power

Whenever there is going to be a major weather event, one of the first casualties is almost always electricity. Losing power in your home is a scary thing because there are so many things we need that electricity for. If you do not have a whole-home backup generator, you should definitely consider investing in one before the next storm! Even a portable backup generator to just power the refrigerator and a couple of lights until full power is restored can make a huge difference.

Inspect Your Roof

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against a hurricane. Before the storm, thoroughly inspect your roof and fix anything that needs fixing. It is also important to make sure your gutters are ready for the storm by getting them totally cleaned out and checking the fasteners to make sure they are all secure.
