Getting Ceiling Fans Ready for Spring

Getting Ceiling Fans Ready for Spring

You probably haven’t needed your home’s ceiling fans just yet, but now is the perfect time to check on them to make sure they’re in good working order.

We know it’s probably hard to believe because of the cool weather here in Maryland, but it’s actually spring! You probably haven’t needed your home’s ceiling fans just yet, but now is the perfect time to check on them to make sure they’re in good working order. Here’s how to get your home’s ceiling fans ready for spring!

Squeaky Clean

First and foremost, you will want to make sure your ceiling fans are clean. If they haven’t been used for a while, dust can accumulate on the blades and the motor’s housing.

  1. To get ready for the cleaning, lay old sheets or drop cloths over flooring and furniture that dust may fall on. Make sure the unit is completely powered off. You will need a sturdy stepladder or stool that puts your eye level at or above that of the fan.
  2. Use a duster to remove the loose dust from the housing (and lights if there are any). Follow that up with a vacuum with the hose attachment. A damp cloth should remove anything else that’s still there.
  3. Grab an old pillowcase and slide it onto each blade one at a time, using your hands to rub dust off with the pillowcase as you slide it off. If necessary, follow up with a damp cloth and/or mild all-purpose cleaner. Take care to make sure you don’t spray any cleaner into the motor’s housing.

The Right Direction

Finally, you will want to make sure your ceiling fans are spinning in the right direction. There is a little switch on the side of the motor’s housing that controls direction. For spring, you want the fans to spin counter-clockwise to have a cooling effect.
